It seems that everyone is being put on a cholesterol lowering drug as suggested by their doctor. My Mom recently visited her doctor and was told to consider going on a cholesterol lowering drug for heart disease prevention. Her cholesterol was at a low level already but the doctor said her charts needed to record that she had recommended this drug. If the Medical Association audited the doctors practise and this was not in every one's chart the doctor would be reprimanded. The word is out that this is the best way to prevent heart disease. These Statins sometimes known as Lipitor have MANY side effects and actually haven't been producing the results that the pharmaceutical companies have been promising. But that's beside the point. Our local newspaper reported last month that three quarters of the people that are on statins don't need to be on this prevention. An article from a medical journal from Harvard Medical School written by Dr. Lance Wright and co-authored by Dr. John Abramson pooled data from eight random trials comparing statins with a placebo in people. The statins did not reduce deaths and, when they looked at women alone, they found NO benefit.
More than 23.6 million Statin prescriptions were dispensed last year. In Canada alone, statins are a $2 billion market. The pharmaceutical company's demand that all doctors strongly recommend everyone to start taking these harmful drugs early. Dr. Wright says " Most people have the impression that statins are going to make them live longer. For primary prevention, there hasn't been demonstrated to be any survival advantage." It is the #1 selling drug in the country. Somethings wrong with this picture.
